ERP requirements checklist for multi-channel ecommerce businesses

By 2 min read

Selling on your own store, on marketplaces, and maybe wholesale too puts specific demands on an ERP. Many systems claim to handle it. Use this checklist to check whether one actually does before you commit.

Orders

  • Pulls orders from every channel into one place automatically.
  • Handles channel-specific rules: marketplace fees, gift cards, discounts, taxes.
  • Supports partial shipments, backorders, and split fulfillment.
  • Manages returns and exchanges across channels.

Inventory

  • One stock position across all channels and locations.
  • Real-time or near-real-time availability pushed to every channel.
  • Support for bundles, kits, and variants.
  • Lot, batch, or expiry tracking if your products need it.
  • Reorder points and purchasing suggestions based on actual demand.

Fulfillment

  • Works with your 3PL or warehouse system, or runs fulfillment itself.
  • Sends tracking and status back to each channel.
  • Handles multiple warehouses and picks the right one.

Finance

  • Channel-level revenue, fees, and margin without spreadsheets.
  • Automatic posting of orders, payouts, and fees to the ledger.
  • Multi-entity and multi-currency if you sell in more than one market.
  • Month-end close that reconciles cleanly.

Integration

  • Proven connections to your storefront platform and your marketplaces.
  • Open APIs so you are not stuck if you add a channel.
  • A clear answer on who builds and maintains each integration.

Reporting

  • Sales, margin, and stock by channel, product, and location.
  • Reports your team can run without asking a developer.

The people side

  • Who will run the system day to day, and can they?
  • What training and support come with it?
  • Who do you call when an integration breaks?
